50s on those temps. 60 in mountain view. a lot of upper 40s in the north bay lately. the low will go in southern nevada. say hello to las vegas. then it will drift back toward central california. so a little warmer today. a westerly breeze. there is thick fog out there. mainly coast or bay. if it's inland it's usually north bay takes its usual path up that way. 58-98. that will be a huge difference in temps today. 50s and 60s by the coast and then you get into 80s inland. here is sal. traffic is going to be good on the golden gate bridge as you head up to the toll plaza. traffic is moving along very nicely this morning as you head

to the toll plaza. also this morning's commute is moving along nicely on the san mateo bridge heading out to the high-rise. and this morning if you are driving on interstate 880 it is a nice drive in both directions. it's 4:30 let's go back to pam. it was a bad night for bart. san francisco police are searching for the vandals that caused major damage to the glen park station. ktvu tara moriarty is at the scene with details on when it happened. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. if you take a look at the wall it appears that vandals started to spray paint the word oscar grant but then rushed off. most of the damage is inside. it happened around just before 10:00 last night when 20-30 people rushed into the glen park station dressed in hoodies and armed with hammers. they smashed two ticket vending machines, all seven clipper card reefers. they were part of a splinter

group from that earlier protest. just after 5:00 last night, this was the scene at the powell street station. police eventually closed in on the demonstrators here shutting down the station for two hours and arresting 30 people. bart officials said previously they would allow protests as long as they happened in the free speech area. >> we are doing exactly what they said we could. >> reporter: protesting? >> yeah. outside the fair gates in a free speech zone. >> reporter: demonstration organizers from no justice no bart said they wanted to test the limitations but bart said it interfered with the trains. in overnight news. an apparent domestic dispute turned deadly in vacaville.

a woman was shot to death. we're told that a man had barricaded himself inside that home. he eventually gave up and is now in custody. also overnight solano county firefighters were working on a grass fire. that started near interstate 680 and gold hill road just after midnight. investigators believe the fire may have started because someone was shooting off flairs in the area. firefighters had the fire out in less than an hour. a large portion of southern california remains in the dark this morning after that massive power outage. it is effecting people right here in the bay area as well. the outage forced san diego's airport to cancel all of its departures. 11 flights were canceled last night. this morning all flights at sfo are on schedule but officials are asking passengers to check with their airline before arriving at the airport. we want to show you new

video this morning. pretty much black because this is orange county in the dark last night as the result of the outage as well. you can see the traffic backed up on the freeways there. and then that huge area in black to the left. it's not vacant area it's just the lights are out. it's believed the utility worker in arizona triggered the outage. >> we didn't cause the problem down here. we were the recipients of the outcome. from that standpoint there will be a very good investigation. >> now the outage originally effected 1.4 million people in the san diego area alope. that number we understand is down to 680,000. but it could be until tomorrow until power is restored to everyone. back here in the bay area today the city of san bruno is marking a sad anniversary. one year ago today they became the scene of one of the most pipeline accidents in u.s.

history. a pg&e pipeline burst into flames and exploded killing eight people and destroying dozens of peoples. the city will honor the victims at skyline college. protestors angry with pg&e will mark the first anniversary at noon today. they will hold a rally outside pg&e head quarters in san francisco. they will mourn the victims while expressing their outrage over pg&e's response to the disaster. just last week the national transportation safety board pointed a finger of blame at pg&e. security has increased around new york city and washington, d.c. this morning after a possible terror threat tied to the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. we want to take you to new york live this morning. this is near ground zero memorial site. u.s. officials say the plot

calls indicating the start of the attacks. a major privacy breach at stanford hospital. the personal information of 20,000 patients have been posted on a commercial website. the data includes people's names and diagnosis and information remains on the website. stanford is investigating what went wrong. the hospital issued a letter to patients apologizing and offering free identity protection services. the woman charged with killing nursing student michelle le is in jail. 27-year-old union city woman is seven months pregnant so her daughters have to give her approval before she can appear in court. she is accused of killing her former high school friend who's body has not been found. investigators say she blamed le for ruining her relationship with her boyfriend. a fundraiser will be held

today for the football player seriously injured during a match. ktvu was the first to tell you that police arrested pat power of half-moon bay yesterday. he's accused of knocking mark unconscious on june 25th. we are told he's recovering well from his brain injury. today's fundraiser will go toward his rehabilitation. right now it's 4:37. we want to check in with sal for an early look at the commute. hi sal. >> >> good morning, pam. traffic is doing very well around the bay area. let's look at the east shore freeway. westbound 80 looks good. no major problems if you are driving to the maze there is a little bit of road work you will see. some of the lanes are off limits. you can see they are picking that up. one of the trucks is backing up picking up the cones and pretty

soon the lanes will be reopened. let's move along and take a look at the westbound bay bridge. it's a small delay at the toll plaza. no major problems getting on the bridge. this mornings commute in san jose is off to a nice start. northbound 280 traffic looking good getting up to highway 17. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. thunderstorms continue to erupt over the sierra. if you're heading that way, keep that in mind. some of the moisture will wrap around toward us. showers are possible. it's like a broad brush forecast. not only that but lightning possible up in the high country. we start off with thick fog. looks like we get a brief warmup today. 50s on the temps. 57 seems popular there. redwood city, hayward, concord, and livermore. for some it's very consistent. the low which is responsible for this is diving down toward southern nevada and then will reverse itself and come back over toward central california.

thick coastal fog and bay fog. warming up inland with warm to mid 90s. it's a very, very tricky call. some may not get any impact from today. over the weekend though partly sunny partly cloudy. a few scattered showers or high based showers are possible. saturday into sunday. mainly sunday. it will be much cooler by sunday. because of the thunderstorms up in the sierra the red flag warning is up. fire warning is up. low humidity and chance of lightning up there. thick fog gives way to sunshine. there is still a westerly breeze. not too strong. 50,60s to 80s, and 90s. it depends on your location. and extended outlook with your weekend in view shows higher clouds saturday and i think things get mostly cloudy on sunday. there is a possibility that

hotels won't enjoy peace and quiet for the next few days. this is the second day of a strike that is scheduled to run until next wednesday night. workers on the picket lines say they want to draw attention to what they call abusive labor practices at some hyatt hotels. >> the yelling with the microphone and coming up to you and right into your space and intimidation i think that it's offensive. it's rude. and it's scary. this morning president obama heads to richmond, virginia to begin selling the jobs plan he announced last night. president proposed a $450 billion plan that calls for payroll tax cuts and federal

spending on school construction, roads, bridges, and jobs training. called on congress to stop the political circus and pass the proposal now to get americans back to work. >> regardless of the arguments we've had in the past, regardless of the arguments we will have in the future, this plan is the right thing to do right now. you should pass it. and i intend to take that message to every corner of this country. >> now the president's proposal also includes tax credits for businesses that hire people who have been out of work for more than six months. not surprisingly the tea party is not supporting president obama's jobs plan. minnesota congresswoman michelle bachmann who is also a republican presidential candidate gave the party response. >> while the president's speech comes on the heels of a trillion dollars of failed stimulus, bailouts, and temporary gimmicks that have been aimed at creating jobs, the president continued to cling to the idea that government is the solution to

creating jobs. >> not all republican response to the president's plan was negative. republican speaker of the how's john boehner says it merits considerup consideration. lawmakers in the states senate has until the close of today to pass ever -- the governor stood with a bipartisan group of assembly lawmakers in announcing the measure yesterday. the governor says it closes a loophole that inned up giving a tax break to out of state companies. brown was able to get the support of two republicans to get it passed in the assembly. it's not clear if he has the same support in the senate. a san francisco woman is recovering after police say she was kidnapped at knife point and raped inside an empty house. 28-year-old sergio cortez picked up at 25-year-old woman for sex around 5:30 yesterday morning in san francisco.

now according to officers, he then drove the victim to an abandoned house on third lane in south san francisco. police only learned of the crime after officers responded from an unrelated call from one of cortez's relatives that lives on the same street. >> i feel sad for that young lady. >> police won't say whether the victim was a prostitute. cortez was on probation for stolen property and now faces kidnapping and rape charges. a five-year-old boy is being treated for life threatening injuries this morning after being hit by a shuttle because in san francisco. it happened in the bay view yesterday afternoon. a woman and another child was crossing the street and the five-year-old was trailing behind. the shuttle hit the boy as it was making a turn on to third street. the driver is cooperating with the investigation. still unclear if he will face any charges. new audio tapes from september 11th are public this morning. and they are giving us a

welcome back to the morning news it's 4:52. there is a new warning of health risks from the flood waters brought by tropical storm lee and hurricane irene. in vermont a dozen towns are

still under orders to boil their water nearly weeks after irene hit. the vermont health department is giving away free test kits to check their private wells for any bacteria. firefighters will use a jet liner to conduct the biggest aerostall yet. it was flown out from southern california to help slow the texas fires. so far the fires have burned 1400 homes and are being blamed for four deaths. expect to see more ads on twitter in the coming weeks. the san francisco based company started showing ads last year but they were limited to companies individual users had chosen to track. now twitter users will see promotional tweets from other companies as well. twitter expects to generate $150 million in ad revenue.

more than triple what it earned last year. fbi agents spent time at the solyndra solar facility. they are working with the department of energy but would not release more details about the raid. solyndra surprised 1100 workers with layoff notices last month. people who live in the south bay are expressing their concerns with apples plans to build new head quarters. it's a 3. 3.1 million square foot building. some people who live nearby are concerned the new building will bring too many cars, slowing traffic in their neighborhoods, and on interstate 280. >> it's beautiful but it's not going to come without an impact. >> as long as the mitigate the traffic impact and do the

mostly. some fog out there. here in lies the rug for today. forecast models want to warm things up. high elevations running cooler. we have a north, northwest wind running up. there is a north wind up in the valley. it's not here yet. i will bump it up a little bit. i did see one patrol jury excused for santa rosa. san francisco from 61 yesterday. when you drop out of the 70s you drop big time. 64 today. concord bumped up one. and san jose two. i just don't see it. i do see a lot of high clouds and thunderstorms up in the sierra, nevada and some of that cloud cover will wrap back up into your weekend. it's running warmer in the weekend. and also san jose showing low

clouds. 57 fairfield, concord, oakland, and livermore. we do have that low dropping down top southern nevada and then it will retro grade and head back to the midwest. today it's coast and bay fog. it will be warming up to a few and low 90s. it's just really i think it's a push for some. some areas will stay the same as yesterday. all eyes will be on that low developing off central and southern california. if it goes down to san jose it will miss us. high bay showers are possible. really it's a bigger deal up in the sierra, nevada. not only for the rain but thunderstorm activity up there. for us thick fog and then sunny. a little warmer. there is a westerly breeze. i don't see the northerly wind. if it's a northerly wind i would say it's a lot warmer. it's not happening. 50s to 90s. for some yeah if you get that north wind it will rock it up. for others it will be slightly warmer. high clouds over the weekend. and then sunday mostly cloudy
